Celebrating Opals

Celebrating October babies and this month’s rainbow-hued birthstone: Opal!

Happy Birthday fellow October babies!

Growing up I LOVED my birthstones. Flashy opal and sweet pink tourmaline were a magical combination, and wearing a special piece with them brought me endless joy! I remember being blown away at the different colors and varieties of opal, and even then I was only aware of those solid white opals with colorful confetti and the flashy blue/green inlay popularly found in silver styles. They carry the best memories and I still love polishing them up and creating one heck of an arm party! Do you have a sweet jewelry memento from your childhood?

As I’ve grown up, I’ve learned so much more about the various types of opals, where they’re mined, how they grow, and what people have used them for through time. It seems like the list of cultures that have assigned magical and mystical powers to opal are endless. There is that *one* book from the 1800’s claiming opal to be unlucky. A few of you have even asked me my thoughts on that belief. Turns out, it’s not based on any ancient belief or experience (!!!) but made for a great story. In reality, throughout the ages, opal has been believed to be the luckiest of all gemstones, have high vibrational energy, boost your optimism, desire, sexuality, and confidence, among others. My favorite of all, is that it’s said to help you fall in love with life. That sounds pretty magical, right? What do we have to lose by believing?

I will never forget the awe and joy I felt seeing the boulder opal split pictured above. My goal is to create that same excitement with each piece of MPD I send out into the world!

From glowing crystal opals to fiery Mexican opals, opaque Peruvian opal, and Australian boulder opals with vibrant high contrast… This magical gemstone has something to offer everyone!
