Jewelry Care

Your jewelry should be treated with love and care.

While Morgan Patricia Designs is made with the intention that it will become a lasting treasured heirloom, please read below for our guidelines to keeping your jewelry looking fresh and clean!

General Guidelines:

Wearing your jewelry while working out & doing other strenuous activities, handling chemicals, swimming (ocean, pools & hot tubs), and even showering is discouraged. It is best to avoid situations where chemicals are present and your jewelry is submerged in water.

Perfumes, lotions, and hair products are great for YOU, but may discolor your jewels. To avoid damage, your jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off at the end of the day.

Please be mindful of your jewelry while wearing it, and choose pieces that fit with your lifestyle. If you have questions about specific MPD styles regarding your daily wear and tear, don’t hesitate to reach out! I will do my best to guide you towards the pieces that best fit your day to day.

Keep in mind that jewelry that looks delicate, is. MPD uses an assortment of fossils and gemstones that require maintenance to uphold their beauty and strength.

A pouch or soft fabric lined jewelry boxes are the best places to store your jewelry while not wearing it. Sleeping in your jewelry is not advised; no one enjoys untangling necklaces in the morning or weakening chain links over time.

Opals, Fossils, Fluorite, Coral, Pearls, etc.:

We love our semi-precious gemstones and fossils! Opals are beautiful, organic gemstones and should be cared for properly to maintain their natural beauty and bright fire. Our fossils have survived for tens of thousands of years, and preserving them at home allows you to enjoy them for a lifetime! These along with coral, pearl (including mother of pearl), fluorite, and emeralds should all follow the “last on, first off” rule.

Please do not use store-bought jewelry cleaners or put MPD pieces incorporating opals, fossils, fluorite, coral, pearl or 14k gold accented gemstones (where a hand carved 14k starfish, coral, moon etc. and post is fixed to a drilled gemstone) into an ultra-sonic cleaner.

Steam clean your diamonds, rubies, and sapphires? YES! Steam clean your opals, pearls, coral, fluorite, and fossils? No thank you!

It is best to keep MPD styles set with non-precious gemstones (ie. anything other than diamonds, rubies, and sapphires) away from moisture, and to avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and oils. They can be gently cleaned with a dry, soft cloth when needed, and I always recommend removing before washing your hands, working out, gardening, and sleeping.

To best care for fluorite and coral carvings, please keep in mind that they are relatively soft minerals (4 on the Mohs hardness scale). Please avoid submerging in water, heat, and prolonged sun exposure to maintain their structural integrity, vibrancy of color, and luster/shine. If you feel like your carved gemstone pendants need to be cleaned, use only a soft lint-free cloth.

Precious Metals & Diamonds:

To keep your gold, diamonds, sapphires, and rubies sparkling, warm water with a touch of (unscented) dish soap and a gentle brushing with a soft bristled/baby tooth brush is all you need. For the ultimate clean I do recommend stopping in at your local jewelry store for a steam cleaning. Polishing cloths will also do the trick for pieces with softer gemstones that do not want to soak in soapy water (like opals, fossils, coral, emeralds, pearls).

Be aware of any components that were purposely oxidized. Polishing cloths and soaps may remove a blackened finish that will need to be reapplied.

If you don’t have access to a professional jeweler with a steam cleaner, use a soft polishing cloth on gold jewelry. Again, warm water with non-detergent soap and a baby tooth brush will help remove any lotion or debris that may find its way into details and settings. Carefully scrub any delicate elements and rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.

If you aren’t sure of the best way to care for a piece of MPD, please reach out! Everything else should be directed towards your local jewelry store.

Of course all jewelry is meant to be worn, seen and enjoyed - please do so with care!
